Aging Skin

What Causes Aging Skin?

Many factors lead to the aging of the skin and the loss of its natural beauty, including environmental and lifestyle components. Composed of three layers that work together, the skin is designed to protect the inner body.

The Natural Aging Process and the Skin

As people age, the body produces less keratin, elastin and collagen. Keratin is a key component of the epidermis or first layer of the skin. Once the body begins to make less keratin, the outer layer of skin begins to break down, loses moisture, and becomes drier and less protective.

more information

As the production of elastin and collagen slows down, the second layer of skin, the dermis, loses its elasticity. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles begin to form in the top two layers as your skin creases and folds.

As both of these layers of skin begin to wear out and become thinner, the third layer of skin loses its ability to maintain its fat cells, a necessary component of healthy skin. Now, the wrinkles and creases begin to sink into this bottom layer of skin, making them much more difficult to diminish in appearance.

The Effect of the Environment and Lifestyle on the Skin

While environmental pollutants and dirt can damage the skin, lifestyle choices can also cause the skin to age prematurely. A poor diet depletes the skin of essential vitamins and moisture. Stress leads to fine lines and wrinkles, commonly called expression lines. With sun exposure, the skin’s moisture is diminished at a faster rate, and the collagen breaks down. Cold weather can make your skin drier, necessitating the use of a good moisturizer.

Excessive alcohol consumption can damage small blood vessels situated near the skin’s surface, causing redness. Exposure to cigarette smoke damages to the skin, even if you aren’t the smoker. Lack of exercise reduces circulation, an essential component of maintaining healthy skin.

Treatments for Aging Skin

A number of home remedies and clinical treatments are available to help soften, moisturize, and strengthen the skin back to good health. Using a combination of home remedies and clinical treatments is the fastest way to restore your skin’s elasticity and beauty.

Exercising each day gets the blood flowing properly.

Yoga and meditation can be used to relieve stress, allowing your skin to stay fresher looking. Getting an appropriate amount of sleep can help you to avoid dark circles and sagging skin.

Exercising each day gets the blood flowing properly. Drinking plenty of water keeps the skin hydrated, and eating foods rich in vitamins nourishes it. Applying coconut milk, which is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and fats, is noted for its moisturizing abilities.

Restoring the beauty of your skin can also be accomplished through the use of beauty care products that encourage the skin’s natural renewal process. They are typically infused with skin-friendly ingredients such as peptides, glycolic acid, Vitamin C, and retinol. Whether you use a product specifically touting anti-aging capability or you elect to apply treatments designed to target a specific issue such as collagen renewal or hydrating capability, your skin will look better for it.

Sunscreen products can help minimize the signs associated with premature aging and protect your skin, keeping it hydrated and healthy. Select a product which offers excellent UVA and UVB protection that encourages your skin’s natural hydration.
