Arnica, also known as Arnica Montana or Leopard’s Bane, is a wildflower that grows in Europe and North America and somewhat resembles a daisy. Starting in the 16th century, Arnica was used in North America, Germany and Russia to help cure wounds and relieve muscle pain.
Arnica has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, decongestive and antifungal properties. Along with speeding up wound healing time, Arnica helps to stimulate blood circulation dispersing trapped blood under the skin which speeds up bruising time. Some homeopathic doctors have found that Arnica can be especially beneficial topically after pregnancy (not during). The flower has been shown to relieve stomach muscle pain and the multi-use herb has even been thought to relieve emotional trauma, depression and increase blood circulation.
It is generally recommended to apply Arnica topically to skin that is in tact – not scratched or open. Some people may notice a warming effect on the skin, which is completely normal as Arnica increases blood flow and circulation. Arnica can be taken as an internal supplement, but the dosage should be at your physician’s discretion.
