Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids found in the epidermis which play an important role in the barrier function of our skin. Our skin barrier is comprised of 50% Ceramides, 25% cholesterol and 15% free fatty acids. This layer of skin helps us retain moisture and prevent environmentally caused irritations. When the barrier is in tact, our skin looks smooth and has a healthy glow. As we age, Ceramides can deplete, causing the moisture barrier to weaken. Applying a product that contains Ceramides can help replenish what we naturally lose over time.
Scientists have also found that a deficit of Ceramides may contribute to certain skin diseases. People with eczema are known to have a defective skin barrier and are also shown to have significantly fewer than normal Ceramides.
