Why Do I Need a Skin Care Regimen?
Regardless of our age or skin type, we can all benefit from a good skin care regimen.
Every day we are exposed to environmental factors and indoor as well as outdoor pollutants. Good basic skin care practices will nourish your skin and give you a fighting chance against the elements. A regimen is important because each step does
something different. We all look for convenience and ways to save time, but unfortunately there is no all-in-one product. Also, it’s not a good idea to cut corners when it comes to caring for your skin. A daily regimen that covers the basics will
keep your skin looking its best.
Step One: Cleanse
Most people should cleanse their face and neck every morning and night. Some with very dry and/or sensitive skin may do better with once daily washing and moisturizing two or more times a day. However, most of us will benefit from cleansing in the morning
and before going to bed. In addition to removing makeup, dirt and contaminants, proper cleansing allows for better penetration of moisturizers.
It is best to use warm water and a mild cleanser (free of harsh detergents, alcohol or chemical fragrances). Good choices include Kinerase Gentle Daily Cleanser and Dr. Brandt Lineless Gel Cleanser.
Gently massage the cleanser over your face with your fingertips, and rinse by splashing with warm water until all residue is rinsed away. Pat gently with a clean towel, being careful not to pull or tug on your skin.
Step Two: Tone
Toning removes any remaining dirt or makeup, and also restores the optimal pH balance of your skin. This prepares the surface for subsequent treatments like moisturizers, anti-aging creams or even prescription creams. For best results, use a cotton ball or pad in gentle upward sweeping motions.
Try Murad Hydrating Toner or Boscia Balancing Facial Tonic.
Step Three: Moisturize
Moisturizing morning and night is essential, regardless of your skin type. The main function is to form a barrier that prevents moisture loss from the top layers of your skin. Moisturizers can repair surface damage and postpone the visible signs of aging, as well as restore hydration levels.
Dry skin types may benefit from a rich formula such as Freeze 24/7 IceCream Double Scoop Intensive Anti-Aging Moisturizer, while oily skin types may prefer a lighter product such as Joey New York Quick Moisturizer Oily Skin Formula.
Apply the moisturizer with your fingertips, using gentle upward strokes.
Step Four: Protect
It is undisputed that daily use of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 is essential to protect your skin. If you are going to be outside for any length of time, look for an SPF of 30 or above. Many moisturizers now contain sunscreen, making it easier than ever to protect your skin. For a good broad-spectrum (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen, try
MD Skincare Powerful Sun Protection SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion, or Peter Thomas Roth Continuous Sunscreen Mist SPF 30.
Extra steps such as eye creams, exfoliation, using masks or different day and night creams are a matter of personal preference, and can be added to your regimen if you feel the need. But by covering the basics, you’ll keep your skin looking its best.
