Cosmetic primers create an adhesive layer for your blush, eye shadow, foundation and lip color, requiring less makeup and resulting in smoother, more even application. Using a primer reduces or precludes the necessity for foundation and provides an added bonus: your makeup will remain fresher, more resilient and longer-lasting, without the creases that often occur as makeup wears off throughout the day. Many people now consider cosmetic primers an essential step in their daily makeup regimens. Primers can also be used for smoothing out fine lines and to hide facial scars, essentially serving as “fillers” to disguise space between skin lines, as well as scars that are sunken into the skin. Tinted primers serve to hide age spots and other discolorations on the skin. Several primers are also available in translucent form. Primers are not for everyone, however; if you suffer from allergies or dermatitis, or if you have milia—tiny cysts appearing just below the eyes—you should consult a physician prior to using a makeup primer.
