Why do men need a different regimen?

There are a plethora of different men’s skincare products on the market — and with good reason. Men’s skin is different from women’s skin.

Males produce a hormone called testosterone, which causes increased sebaceous gland activity, thus men’s skin is oftentimes more oily than women’s skin. Excess oil production is associated with acne, therefore many men’s skincare products contain ingredients that are meant to control oil, clear clogged pores, and treat acne breakouts.

Males have thicker skin with smaller pores, so it’s more difficult for treatment products to penetrate. Accordingly, men’s skincare products will typically have higher concentrations of active ingredients and will be more aggressive than products that are made specifically for women.

Men’s skin requires extra attention and use of appropriate skincare products that address acquired skin sensitivity. Male skin is typically exposed to more oxidative stress through environmental factors (outside work, sports), and as most men shave regularly the hydrolipidic barrier becomes depleted, making the skin fragile and more susceptible to irritation. This is why topical antioxidants, sunscreen, and appropriate moisture-replenishing products are important for men.

In order to have healthy skin, one must have an appropriate skincare regimen. A man should cleanse his skin, use a toner, exfoliate regularly, and use the appropriate hydrator and sunscreen. Additional treatment products and weekly treatment masks are also a great addition to a man’s regimen.

Men’s Skin Care Routine

Taking care of your skin does not have to be a time consuming process; you can follow a few easy steps for healthy looking skin. The basic routine for men is as follows:

Cleansers are made to remove residue and excess oils from the skin and prepare your skin for treatment products.

Toners are created to balance the pH of your skin as well as rid of any excess residue left on the skin post-cleansing and shaving.

Many men find shaving painful and uncomfortable, and numerous men suffer from irritation associated with shaving. This is most likely due to improper technique or the incorrect products used. There are many different types of shaving products to choose from, and everyone will have their own personal preference.

Everyone should exfoliate their skin – especially men. Since men have thicker skin the rate at which they slough off dead skin cells is fairly slow. Exfoliating the skin allows for a healthy radiance, and for treatment products to penetrate deeper, working better. There are two types of exfoliating products, manual exfoliants and chemical exfoliants.

Although many cleansers, toners and moisturizers are outfitted with built-in treatment ingredients like antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, lighteners, et cetera, many men require an extra step in their regimen to yield their desired results, especially when addressing specific concerns like lines, wrinkles, acne or hyperpigmentation. Treatment products allow for you to go the extra mile when caring for your skin.

Moisture is essential to skin health. Hydrated skin is healthy skin and it looks supple and strong. Most moisturizers will also contain antioxidants to protect the skin, and other ingredients to address different concerns, such as lightening agents to address pigmentation, or anti-aging ingredients to address lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. Skin that is lacking hydration will look dull and sallow. Choose an appropriate moisturizer based on your skin type.

It’s of the utmost importance that everybody wears a sunscreen on a daily basis. Sunscreen will protect your skin from the sun’s detrimental ultra violet rays. Excessive sun exposure leads to skin cancer, and hyperpigmentation of the skin.
