My 5–Step Nighttime Ritual for a Better Beauty Sleep

Yoshiko Roth–Hidalgo

Recently, I feel like every week we hear about new research that shows how important nighttime sleep is to our health. Getting enough quality sleep at night seems to be one of the key factors, if not THE key factor for our well–being, whether we’re talking about our metabolism, hormonal balance, immune system, our mental and emotional well–being, or – yes – our skin’s health. We need our “beauty sleep”, literally.

The irony is, that in times of stress (whether it’s an overfull work schedule, travel or challenges at home), when we need rest the most, falling asleep can be quite difficult for so many of us. As a working mother of two kids under 4, I often find myself FINALLY in bed after a long, stressful day, only to feel strangely wired and not able to fall asleep. Sound familiar?

When the “to–do–list” is a mile long, and you barely have time to wash your face, the idea of a nighttime ritual seems frivolous, but simple rituals before bed time are exactly what can help us calm down, relax mind and body and slip more effortlessly into slumber. Even just 15 minutes of a soothing ritual can help facilitate better sleep. This is also the perfect time to incorporate some TLC for your skin.

Here is my 15–minute nighttime ritual in 5 easy steps for body, skin and mind. Sometimes I only do a portion of it, sometime I add to it.

  1. Start with a simple yoga stretch
I actually do not do yoga, but I like to begin my ritual with downward dog, followed by cobra and happy child pose, all the while breathing deeply. Anybody can do these three poses. It stretches out tense muscles in our back and neck, and you will instantly feel more relaxed overall when you have done this sequence a few times.
  2. Cleanse your face and apply a mask
Next, I wash my face with JUARA Rice Facial Cleanser to remove all the dirt that has accumulated – literally and figuratively – over the course of a long day. Then I apply a generous amount of JUARA’s Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask all over my face. The Kaolin Clay draws out impurities from the pores and gives my skin a dose of superfood Turmeric, which has great anti–inflammatory properties and helps brighten skin.
  3. Relax with a cup of tea…or wine
While I let the mask work on my face for about 10 minutes, I enjoy a cup of tea on the couch. Any non–caffeinated tea works. My favorite is a self–brewed mix of boiled fresh ginger with turmeric powder, raw honey and lemon, which I pre–make every couple of days and warm up at night. Turmeric actually aids our liver in ridding the body of toxins and also helps our pancreas’ ability to regulate blood sugar and insulin levels. Ginger warms the body and helps digestion. Soothing, slow–paced music can add to the relaxing effect. My favorite is Debussy’s piano pieces. Sometimes, I have to admit, it is not Turmeric–Ginger tea, but rather, a glass of red wine with my husband. Sometimes I can even convince him to join me for the skin care part, and then we both sit on the couch with the Turmeric Mask on. By the way, keep the alcohol to just a little. Too much will actually affect the quality of your sleep and make you feel sluggish the next morning.

Also, try to give screen time break during this ritual. Research suggests that tablet or laptop use up to 2 hours before bedtime hinders our ability to fall asleep. The idea is that the bright screen lights interfere with our body’s natural release of melatonin, the sleep hormone. I try to stick to reading paper books or chatting with my husband. If screen use is unavoidable, turn down the brightness of the screen.
  4. Pamper your skin while you sleep
After having given body, mind and skin time to relax, I wash off the mask with tepid water and directly apply JUARA’s Clove & Turmeric Anti–Aging Serum. Our skin is the most receptive to treatment at night, so this is the time to apply product that’s packed with antioxidants and other restorative ingredients. The combination in this serum of brightening Clove and Turmeric with a firming Peptide–Goji complex and skin–plumping Sea Algae helps my skin look rested, more even toned and smoother the following morning. Also, your skin looses quite a bit of moisture over the course of the night, so a moisturizer is a must. I love my JUARA Sweet Black Tea & Rice Facial Moisturizer, which makes my sensitive skin baby–soft with Kombucha, Rice Bran Oil and Avocado Butter.
  5. Lights out…
I am finally in bed, under the covers. I finish my night ritual by quick–massaging my winter–dry hands with JUARA Candlenut Body Creme, a tub of which I keep on my bedside table. Now, lights out and time to meditate. Meditating sounds like a big deal, but it can be as simple as focusing on your breathing. When I feel worries trying to enter my mind again, I visualize stuffing them into a drawer and telling them “I’ll get back to you tomorrow”. Breathe deeply, visualize a peaceful, safe place…mountains, ocean waves… zzz…
