Tea Tree Oil, also known as Melaleuca Oil is an essential oil from the leaves of the Melaleuca Alternifolia, commonly known as the Paperbark Tree. This tree is native to Australia. People of eastern Australia have used the leaves of this tree to help treat coughs, colds and other ailments for hundreds of years by soaking the leaves in hot water. The essential oil of the leaves, Tea Tree Oil, was not used until the 1920’s when a researcher published reports of its great antimicrobial activity. After World War II, a demand for the oil declined as effective antibiotics were hitting the market. The oil became popular again in the 1970’s when interest in natural products peaked.
When applied topically, Tea Tree Oil has several beneficial properties. It’s antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. Tea Tree Oil is even effective against mites, scabies or head lice. Studies have shown that Tea Tree Oil is also very effective in treating acne. 5% Tea Tree Oil has been shown to be as effective as 5% Benzoyl Peroxide without the negative side effects.
Pure Tea Tree Oil can cause irritation on those with highly sensitive skin. If you have sensitive skin you should dilute the oil with another oil base or buy a product that already has Tea Tree Oil mixed with other ingredients.
