Turmeric, also known by its botanical name Curcuma Longa, is a member of the ginger family and possesses both antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Prior to its application to skin care, Turmeric was used for cooking and ceremonial purposes. Because of its strong yellow coloring, Turmeric helps provide pigment to food items such as mustard. In India it is customary before a wedding ceremony to apply Turmeric in a paste form to the bride and groom to give the skin a glow. Turmeric is also believed to ward off harmful bacteria.
When used in skin care products, Turmeric helps to lighten pigmentation by destroying melanocytes (pigment producing cells). Along with diminishing brown spots, Turmeric has been found to be an excellent skin exfoliator. Turmeric also contains antioxidants that can help to fight off those pesky free radicals that make us age.
