What is Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis?

What is Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis?

A Natural Oil Great for all Skin Types

Translated from Latin, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis means sweet almond oil and is one of the most frequently used carrier oils and most adaptable body oils for beauty products and massage. Cultivated thousands of years ago, sweet almond oil is extracted from ripe seed kernels that have been dried and crushed through a cold pressing process. Today almonds can be used in anything from exfoliants (using the nut or the kernel as a mechanical exfoliant), used as an emulsifying agent to bind oil and water or as a skin-conditioning product to help soften and hydrate. Pure sweet almond oil contains countless nutrients including calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and vitamin E. These essential vitamins nurture the skin on the outside and when applied topically, promote softer, more nourished skin.

What is Cold Pressing?

Extracting oil through cold pressing involves crushing the raw nut and forcing out the oil. The product is dropped inside a cylinder that contains a rotating screw and the screw is then turned to grind and crush the almonds until the oil is pushed out and extracted. Small holes in the bottom of the cylinder allow the oil to escape and be collected. Although some heat is created through friction as the screw breaks down the almonds, it’s usually not enough heat to damage the oil and is the best method of extraction for natural oils to retain all of the essential fatty acids and vitamins needed to nourish the skin.

What is it Used in?

Almond oil features a light consistency so the skin readily absorbs the natural oils from the nut to replenish and reduce dryness in the upper layers of the skin. Almond oil is also a popular ingredient included in formulas designed to reduce fine lines on the face, moisturize the skin, soothe dry, chapped lips, and relieve itching. It is a rich emollient that moisturizes the skin with renewed hydration, helping to minimize signs associated with premature aging and creating a glow to the skin when absorbed.
