Fruit — A Sweet Treat for Your Skin
There have been countless articles written about the benefits of fruit in our diets, supplements and even wine. But the antioxidants
in concentrated fruit extracts can do wonders for our skin when applied topically. Blueberry, pomegranate, cranberry and grape extracts, just to name a few, can improve the tone and texture of the skin. There is also evidence that fruit extracts can fight sun damage and may even help prevent skin cancer.
Perhaps a little review on antioxidants is in order. When the cells in our bodies use oxygen, they naturally produce by-products called free radicals, which can cause oxidative damage and aging of cells. This damage occurs at the cellular level, as the healthy molecules that make up cells are attacked by
free radicals. Environmental and internal stressors also contribute, and the damage can be quite noticeable on the skin. Antioxidants act as scavengers, preventing and even repairing damage done by free radicals. Antioxidants are most often derived from fruits, vegetable, legumes and nuts.
Blueberries have long been considered a “super” fruit for their high antioxidant content. Alchimie Forever Yttrium Deeply Protective Day Cream and Obagi ELASTIderm Night Eye Cream
both contain blueberry extract. Speaking of super, the acai berry is getting quite a lot of attention in the U.S. lately. The natives of Brazil have long known the many benefits of this little round, purple-black berry, and we’re beginning to learn of them as well. Some sources say acai boasts 10 times the
antioxidant benefits of blueberries and grapes. Looking for a way to work acai into your skin care routine? BORBA Firming Neck and Decollete Cream and Borba Age Defying Concentrate
are good choices.
If you’re thinking about cranberries with the holidays approaching, you’ll be happy to know that you can have your cranberries (on your skin) and eat them too! Skyn Iceland Glacial Facial Wash is soothing to stressed skin,
and June Jacobs Cranberry Pomegranate Moisture Mask is a hydrating treat for anyone. Some people think the holiday table isn’t complete without wine. We can now enjoy the benefits of powerful grape extracts in
Alchimie Forever Kantic Brightening Moisture Mask and Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum . Pomegranates are a favorite part of autumn, and if you’re a fan, you can incorporate the extract into your skin care
regimen with Murad Energizing Pomegranate Cleanser or EmerginC Pomegranate Toner.
Fruit extracts are available in many different products, so have some fun trying different things to see what you like. The bounty of the harvest can enrich our health inwardly as well as outwardly.
