Getting the Most Out of Your Moisturizer
Most of us know that we should moisturize every day but now that winter is here, it’s extra important to get
the most out of your moisturizer. Nothing dehydrates the skin like colder, drier air. Like anything, moisturizers perform best when they are used properly so here are some helpful tips to maximize on the benefits of your daily hydrator.
Make sure you moisturize after cleansing thoroughly and toning (toning is an optional step). Your skin should be towel dried but still moist since moisturizers work by holding in water that is already on the skin. They do not generate additional moisture.
For an extra boost, look for serums containing hyaluronic acid, a moisture binding agent. Cellex-C Hydra 5B Complex and BENEV Hyaluronic Moisturizer are both serums
that should be applied before your moisturizer to boost its effectiveness. To cut down on steps in your beauty routine, you can also choose a moisturizer that contains a moisture binding agent like Peter Thomas Roth Viz 1000,
or Z. Bigatti Re-Storation Delicate Intensive Moisturizing Cream.
Regular exfoliation is essential in obtaining the full benefits of moisturizing. Without exfoliation, your moisturizer will sit on top of layers of dead skin cells. This makes it harder for your product to penetrate the healthy cells. Once or twice a week after cleansing,
exfoliate with a product like Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion. If your skin is especially sensitive or if you have active acne, choose an enzyme exfoliator like Celazome Enzyme Exfoliating Masque.
Enzymes dissolve dead skin without irritating healthy cells.
Super dry types sometimes find that their moisturizers don’t work all day under certain conditions. When it’s not convenient to apply a cream or lotion, you can replenish moisture easily by using a hydrating mist like La Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water
or Evian Mineral Water Spray. Hydrating mists can often allow you to get through the day without feeling dry and tight. You can mist away as often as you like.
Remember that moisturized skin is healthier and more resilient than dehydrated skin. Keeping your skin well hydrated will help it ward off all kinds of problems.
