Resolve to Create Your Perfect Beauty Regimen
Most of us think about some sort of resolution in January. This year, instead of overly-ambitious promises that would trouble even the most dedicated among us, why not resolve to determine a simple, effective beauty regimen that is right for you? Numerous studies have shown that reasonable and practical resolutions are much more likely to become part of your regular routine.
I will cleanse my face twice a day.
We all know we should, but many women are less than diligent with this most basic step. Have you ever fallen into bed exhausted, thinking you would just take care of your face in the morning? You're not alone, but consider this: all of the dust, dirt and environmental pollutants you have been exposed to throughout the day, not to mention your makeup, ends up on your pillow case.
Use of a toner is seen as an optional step by some and a necessity by others. Those who think toners are not completely necessary believe a good quality cleanser will remove all traces of dirt and makeup. Others find that a toner will remove anything their cleanser missed. Opinions among estheticians vary, so it is really a matter of personal preference and what works best for your skin.
I will moisturize every day.
Our skin care needs change as we age, and can also change with the seasons. Fortunately, there is a great variety of products for all manner of skin types and ages. An effective moisturizer not only provides a protective barrier for your skin against the elements, but it will help allow your skin to heal itself while leaving it smooth and supple.
I will exfoliate once per week.
Many women skip this important step, assuming that their cleanser will do a sufficient job of removing the outer layer of mostly dead skin cells. Weekly exfoliation will give you fresher, brighter looking skin by exposing new cells. It will also allow for better penetration of active ingredients in your skin care products. The question of using a physical or chemical exfoliant is really up to you. You may want to experiment to see which kind you prefer. Physical exfoliants consist of some sort of mildly abrasive material such as micro beads, magnesium oxide crystals or diatomaceous earth, while chemical exfoliants use fruit enzymes, alpha or beta-hydroxy acids.
I will use sunscreen every day, even in the winter.
Daily protection is a must, regardless of the weather, your age or skin type. A broad-spectrum sunscreen will not only protect you from both UVA (cancer-causing) and UVB (burning) rays, but it will help guard against dull skin, wrinkles and discoloration. Getting into the habit of daily use will be easier if you find a sunscreen appropriate to your skin type, whether it is dry, oily, youthful or mature. Lighter, mattifying products work well if your skin tends to be oily, while more mature skin can benefit from moisturizing anti-aging sunscreens.
