Treating Hyperpigmentation
HyperpigmentationWe all know how important it is to use a daily sunscreen. Haven’t we preached enough about this subject? Many of you might be asking what can be done to reverse some of the damage that’s occurred over the years. One of the most common symptoms of continual sun exposure is the appearance of hyperpigmentation commonly known as age or sun spots. These stubborn patches of excess pigmentation are difficult to lighten but there is help and with persistence, you can expect to see a substantial improvement.

The first step in treating dark spots is avoiding sun exposure or using a sunscreen product when exposure is inevitable. We hate to preach one more time but if you are not willing to commit to sun protection, there is no point in attempting to treat hyperpigmentation. The sun will only worsen dark spots and cause new spots to appear. You won’t see results if you continue to expose unprotected skin.

It used to be that the only option for lightening the skin was hydroquinone, a chemical bleaching agent that has been the source of much controversy. Hydroquinone should only be used temporarily as a spot treatment and is not recommended for sensitive skin as it often causes irritation. Because of all of the controversy, many skin care companies are phasing out hydroquinone and opting for gentler, botanical based lighteners.

Natural extracts like kojic acid, mulberry and licorice have been found to break up excess pigmentation that forms in the layers of the skin. When combined with alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids which exfoliate dead skin cells, the results are even better. The easiest way to lighten is to incorporate brightening products into your daily routine. DDF Brightening Cleanser makes for a convenient way to gently brighten the skin while cleansing, the most basic skin care step. Before moisturizing, apply a face cream like Dr. Michelle Copeland AHA Face Cream to even out skin tone. If you’d like to shorten your beauty routine and combine lightening and moisturizing into one step, try Donnell Super Skin Brightening Cream. One to three times a week exfoliate with a product like Tracie Martyn Enzyme Exfoliant which gently resurfaces the skin using non-irritating enzymes. The botanical lighteners diminish dark spots and leave the skin looking brighter.

Skin lighteners also work great when it comes to fading marks left from old blemishes. These marks are caused by inflammation and can often linger for weeks, months or in some cases years after the blemish itself has healed.

Be persistent when it comes to lightening dark spots. Expect to start seeing results after 6-8 weeks of continual use of lightening products. Exceptionally dark and old spots will take longer to fade. Think about how long it took for them to form and exercise patience when waiting for them to lighten.
