With your hair style, you can make a bold fashion statement and reveal your personality. You may prefer a short, angular bob with every strand of hair held in place by hairspray or a wild, wavy style that has been scrunch dried using mousse. No matter how you wear it, shiny, luxurious, manageable hair is only possible if you put in place a regular regimen to cleanse, condition, and protect both your scalp and hair. A healthy scalp is vital if you want to produce thick, lustrous locks. Hair growth begins in the follicles, which lie just below the surface of the scalp. The part of the hair that extends above the scalp is called the shaft. The shaft is made of keratin, a protein produced naturally in the body.

Like skin, hair is protected by a natural oil known as sebum. Sebum is produced in the sebaceous glands located in the scalp. In some individuals, the sebaceous glands produce more sebum than is required. This can lead to hair looking oily, greasy, and lank. Alternatively, the sebaceous glands may be underactive, in which case hair will be dryer than average. Dry hair can also be caused by overheated environments, excessive sun exposure, and overuse of heated styling products.

Hair should be cleansed at least three or four times each week using a shampoo that suits your hair type. Typically, shampoos are used on wet hair. However, for individuals in a hurry or when greasy hair needs a touch up, there are dry shampoos that can be used when a full hair wash is not possible. After shampooing, most hair types benefit from conditioning. Some conditioners need to be rinsed off after use, while others can be left on to continue working on the hair as you blow dry it. Hair should be shielded from the heat of blow dryers and straightening irons using protective creams or sprays.

Long hair can be prone to knots and tangles, particularly if it is fine, curly, or dry. For hair that tangles easily, it is important to use a conditioner every time you wash your hair to replenish vital moisture. An additional conditioning treatment once per week may be beneficial for dry or frizzy hair. A detangling spray used before blow-drying will help to coat and smooth each hair strand, helping to keep them separated. A wide-toothed comb is an essential accessory for anyone with hair that tangles easily because it will help to gently remove knots without pulling the hair from the scalp.

Children often have knots and tangles in their hair because it is finer than adult hair. This can lead to tears and tantrums when the child gets her hair brushed because the brush tugs and pulls at the hair as it becomes caught in the knots and tangles. Special detangling conditioners and sprays have been developed for children’s hair to help to ease this problem.

It is always best to use a comb when your hair is wet because the hair shaft can split if you brush wet hair. This causes a condition known as split ends. Once the end of the hair shaft splits, it cannot be mended. It can only be trimmed off the next time you visit your hairdresser. The best way to prevent split ends is to use a conditioner regularly to keep the hair shafts hydrated. This increases their elasticity and strength. Some products can moisturize and condition the hair to disguise split ends until your next hair appointment.
