Our Beauty Glossary is your definitive guide to every important beauty term ever. From A – Z, we’ll regularly fill you in on beauty ingredients, personalities, products and treatments, so you know exactly who or what to look out for in the beauty space.

Hya-luronic Acid

Simply put, hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring chemical substance found in the body. It’s an ingredient that cushions joints and nerves and hydrates the skin and hair. The benefits of Hyaluronic acid include magical properties, no really. Its superpower is its ability to retain moisture, so much so in fact, that 1g of hyaluronic acid can hold upto 6l of water.

The Ageless Story of Yuzurihara

There is a village in Japan, Yuzurihara, which sits just 2 hours from Tokyo. It is inhabited by men and women with smooth, wrinkle-free skin, even past the age of 80 or 90. Their joints are flexible, their heads full of hair, and their lives vivacious. This is not to say Yuzurihara folks don’t know how to party. Sure they do. They smoke and drink too. So what is their secret?

There is no fountain of youth in Yuzurihara, as years of research found. There are only diets rich in oestrogen-like molecules from soya, tofu and sticky carbohydrates. These send signals to the cells to make more hyaluronic acid. Because HA is one of the major components of our extracellular matrix (the framework in which our skin cells sit), it puts hyaluronic acid as the skincare show’s star performer.

What are the skincare benefits of hyaluronic acid?

Ageing skin begins to resemble a raisin but youthful skin is plump and juicy like a fresh peach. This is down to a high water content. The benefits of hyaluronic acid come into play here. It is moisturising on another level, acting as a sponge and holding large amounts of water. It’s commonly found in anti-ageing products because it strengthens the skin’s barrier so it looks and feels softer, smoother and ‘juicier’.
