Another letter in our beauty glossary, another ingredient showcase. When I think of licorice it's usually the candy kind (for me an acquired taste), for others it might be about tea. Licorice comes from a plant that has 50 times the natural sweetness of refined sugar but without the calories!

But it's the skincare show where licorice is the real star. In creams, serums, masks and treatments - licorice is a skin brightening ingredient that can help with hyperpigmentation, melasma, sun damage and acne scarring. Licorice extract has anti-inflammatory properties that help to calm the skin, ease conditions such as eczema and reduce skin irritation and redness.

To add to that list of powers, licorice extract is antimicrobial, anti-carcinogenic and has antioxidant and antiviral properties.
