By exfoliating 2-3 times a week with a scrub or chemical exfoliate, you can keep your skin clear and prevent razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Using a clean sharp razor will also help to prevent ingrown hairs. To prevent irritation or increased sensitivity, exfoliate the day before you shave.
There are two types of exfoliants, manual and chemical:
A facial scrub will have some type of granules such as cranberry jojoba beads that will manually remove the dead skin. If you have sensitive skin, a scrub that is microfine or spherical in texture will be less likely to scratch or aggravate your skin.
A chemical exfoliant contains alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic, lactic, or citric acid. This will exfoliate the skin on the surface and provide a smoother texture to the skin. Beta Hydroxy acids like salicylic can penetrate into the inner layers of the skin because they are oil soluble. They can exfoliate the dead skin cells that are deep inside the pore, improving your skin from the inside out.
