At-Home Bikini Waxing 101

At-Home Bikini Waxing 101

The bikini is 70 years old today! So far we’ve had Princess Leia in that gold bikini, all those Bond girl two-pieces (we’re looking at you Ursula Andress), Angelina Jolie’s little black number in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and countless iconic bikini moments featuring Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot. What a time to be alive.

But 70 years later bikini waxing still hasn’t gotten easier. Those in-between days remind us that the struggle is real.

So we decided to share everything we could on how to nail it at home, so you can get that Sports Illustrated cover girl look without going to the salon.

    Prepare the Hair

Prepare your precious lady for the big day by exfoliating around 24 hours beforehand, sloughing away dead skin cells and softening the area. This makes it easier for the wax to grab onto the hairs, so you get the cleanest and least painful results.

We love the Almond Three Whishes Sugar Scrub because…almond. The sweet combination of brown sugar, raspberry seeds, bamboo powder and organic sugar cane extract gives your shower experience the scent of a homemade cherry bakewell pie.

While this scrub is typically used for the face, we found that the delectable ingredients create a highly effective combo that targets old skin, teases the hair roots and prepares it for waxing. You can also use it post-waxing to discourage ingrown hairs.

    Hair Today Gone Tomorrow

Worry will cause more pain during waxing because the nerve endings are more acute, so if you’re not 100% fearless then take a couple of aspirin in advance, or even drink a glass of wine.

Ensure the bikini area is clean and dry, then sprinkle a little powder to get the most out of your session.

Test a small sample of wax on your inner arm (it should be hot but not scalding) then lay it on in fairly thin layers. Apply the wax downward, in the direction of the hairs, but pull backwards, against the hair growth. Go hard and fast, stripping the hair in a swift motion while you pull your skin taut.

Those stubby little hairs don’t stand a chance with the Bliss Poetic set, which contains everything you need for an at-home, spa-style waxing session. This Australian, aromatherapy-based hair-removal system includes a pre-waxing lotion to keep wax from sticking to the skin, and shrink wraps tough hair to pull it straight out from the root. The wax is colorful so you can see what you’re doing, and it can grab hair upto 1 mm short. It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin so it can be used anywhere else on the body.

The low-temperature wax expels unwanted hairs in a jiffy.
