We love a good hair mask. They really do make all the difference in the world, especially with how often we change styles and hair colors. The day we have our hair colored it appears soft, healthy and vibrant as the hair color smoothes the hair cuticle for a short period of time. While coloring the hair is detrimental to the condition of the hair, the heated styling tools and harsh chemicals we use on our hair are often the culprits of split ends and dull, dehydrated strands. But when you don't want to abandon your favorite styles and colors, you need to treat your strands with some extra TLC whenever possible. With the launch of the HairStore at SkinStore, we've gone all in on all things healthy hair (or at least, how to restore healthy hair while still being BFFs with our flat iron).  Here are a few of our editors' hair treatments to save those lovely locks of yours!

Best Hair Mask for Dry Hair

VIRTUE's Restorative Treatment Mask deeply hydrates and repairs all hair types without weighing it down, while adding shine, moisture, and smoothing hair. The secret is their proprietary Alpha Keratin 60ku®: a protein that’s nearly identical to the protein that makes up our hair, skin, and nails and delivers an immediate and intense hydrating and conditioning boost.

Best Hair Mask for Curly Hair

Philip Kingsley's Elasticizer is a multi award‐winning conditioning pre‐shampoo treatment that's packed with effective ingredients like Castor Oil and Hydrolyzed Elastin and is especially beneficial for extremely damaged, textured, and coarse and fine hair. This super moisturizing intensive treatment delivers elasticity, manageability, bounce and shine and even helps prolong the life of your color treatments and protects your strands from brushing and heat styling.

Best Hair Mask for Damaged Hair

Giving you two masks in one, Grow Gorgeous' Repair Strengthening Hair and Scalp Mask is a hair mask and scalp treatment that reinforces brittle strands and helps to stimulate healthy hair growth. It's infused with cuticle smoothing technology to minimize flyaways for sleeker-looking strands and is ideal for heat damaged or over-processed dry, brittle hair.

Best Overnight Hair Mask

We love using KLORANE's Nourishing 2-in-1 Mask with Mangoovernight to really quench our strands when they're particularly parched. It's plant-based formula seals in moisture, provides long-lasting nourishment and hydration, and adds shine, without the weight. Plus, it smells absolutely delicious.

How to Use a Hair Mask

  • Overnight masks - For overnight masks, apply to damp, clean hair before you go to bed and wash out in the morning.
  • In-shower masks - After shampooing your hair, apply the mask on the lengths and ends of your hair and leave in for five minutes. Rinse the mask out before getting out of the shower.
  • Masks outside of the shower - For a mask you are applying outside of the shower and not leaving on overnight, apply the mask to damp, clean hair on the lengths and ends. Leave in for 5-10 minutes and then rinse.

Pro tip: Not every mask is built the same! Make sure to read the unique instructions on your hair mask's packaging to see if they suggest a different method for application.

Maintaining a hair regimen and masking 2-3 times a month will keep your hair smooth and silky all year round. So be sure to weigh in your thoughts on the good, the bad, and the ugly – we want to hear them all!
