Horse Chestnut Extract comes from the nut of the Horse Chestnut Tree, also known as Aesculus Hippocastanum or Conker Tree. The Horse Chestnut got its name because it was once believed that if a horse ate these nuts, they would be cured of chest complications. Horse Chestnuts are also thought to keep spiders away when placed in the corner of a room within a house.
Two of the most common issues we hear about are broken capillaries and varicose veins. There have been studies showing that the Horse Chestnut can help improve both conditions. Part of the Horse Chestnut is an active compound called Escin. This ingredient is an excellent vasoconstrictor which helps to strengthen veins and capillaries. Along with strengthening capillary walls, Horse Chestnut Extract can also improve circulation and reduce inflammation. Because it helps increase circulation, Horse Chestnut Extract has been shown to reduce edema or swelling within the legs.
