Lycopene (lahy-kuh-peen), mainly found in tomatoes, belongs to a class of compounds called carotenes and has been shown to be twice as effective at scavenging free radicals as Vitamin E. In addition to fighting off free radicals, lycopene helps to improve cell function, improves skin texture and helps to block UV light. Though lycopene contains an SPF level, it is not sufficient on its own and needs to be combined with a daily sunscreen for proper sun protection. When used as a dietary supplement, lycopene is not only an internal antioxidant; it has also shown potential as an agent in the prevention of some types of diseases.
