Everyone’s after a gorgeous sun-kissed glow; but prolonged exposure to UV rays can compromise the health of your skin. UV rays are stronger during the spring and summer months, meaning there’s an increased risk of damage to the skin if the necessary precautions are not taken. La Roche Posay’s new innovation; the ‘My UV Patch’ contains photosensitive dyes which change color when they come into contact with harmful UV rays to help you to stay safe in the sun.

What are UV rays?

UV rays are a type of radiation which are produced by the sun. There are three kinds of UV rays; UVA, UVB and UVC rays, each one with varying wavelengths. Our skin most commonly comes into contact with UVA and UVB rays as UVC rays are absorbed by the Earth’s ozone layer due to their short wavelength.

Why are UV rays dangerous?

UVA rays have the longest wavelength, meaning that they can penetrate the middle layer of skin, the dermis. Every time the skin is exposed to UV rays, the skin becomes damaged and the cells begin to mutate. This can cause anything from accelerated ageing to skin cancer, so the more the skin is exposed to UV rays, the more mutations will take place within the cells.

Side effects of UV damage to skin:

  • Increased rate of aging
  • Wrinkles
  • Loss of elasticity
  • Liver spots
  • Skin cancer

If you're spending time in the sun like the Hudgens sisters, there are ways to protect yourself from the harmful effects of UV rays.

UV rays are at their strongest between 10am and 4pm, even on cloudy days. The best way to avoid skin damage from UV rays is to stay in the shade between these hours, cover up,  wear a high SPF sunscreen and monitor your UV exposure using the La Roche Posay ‘My UV patch’.

What is the My UV Patch?

The My UV Patch and mobile app are designed to be used together in order to monitor the skin’s exposure to UV rays throughout the day. The stretchable electronic patch should be applied directly to the skin and, once applied; the showerproof patch can be worn for up to three days. Users can take a picture of the patch using the My UV Patch app, which analyses the photosensitive dyes on the patch in order to offer tailored sun-safe advice to the user. The My UV Patch will not leave a tan line if the sufficient amount of sunscreenis used to protect the skin- our favorite is the La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid, which provides lightweight SPF60 protection.

Protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays with the La Roche Posay My UV Patch- free with every purchase from the Anthelios line at SkinStore!
