Acne

What is acne? Besides a nightmare, acne is the infection of the follicle that has been blocked by an overproduction of oil, debris and dead skin cells. Acne can take on many different forms including: whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules and cysts.
Whiteheads – are smaller in size and remain under the skin, they can come to a white ‘head’, thus the name whitehead.
Blackheads – are similar to whiteheads but have reached the surface of the skin and oxidized, therefore turning black or grey in color.
Papules – White or pink bumps on the surface of the skin.
Pustules – Similar to papules but usually have an irritated red ring with a pus-filled top.
Cysts – Most of the infection in under the skin surface. Cystic acne is often hormonal and common in adults. Cystic breakouts can scar easily and are often painful to the touch.
Acne is associated with a hormone called androgen, which can cause an excess of sebum production in the pore.
You can treat a mild case of acne with a variety of different over the counter products. Look for ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, retinol, and glycolic acid.
